Degree programs

With more than 200 degree programs, the LMU offers a wide range of subjects. Bachelor’s and master's degrees have now been standardized throughout Europe (Bologna Process), replacing the traditional diplomas and “Magister” degrees previously conferred by German universities. However, one special feature of the German educational system has remained: law, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy and teacher training end with “state examinations” which are divided into two or three phases.

Undergraduate studies: Bachelor and state examinations

Bachelor’s and state examination degrees are classed as undergraduate degree programs. In order to be admitted to a bachelor’s or state examination degree, you will need to be proficient in German and in possession of a university entrance qualification. In addition, admission to many bachelor’s degree programs and all state examinations is dependent on further conditions, e.g. pre-registration, aptitude tests or local or national admission restrictions which depend in turn on the average grade of your school leaving certificate (“numerus clausus”).

The standard period of study for bachelor’s degree programs is three to a maximum of four years. In state examination degree programs, which are interspersed with internships, the period of study can vary widely from subject to subject.

Advanced studies: master's and postgraduate degree programs

In general, master's degree programs last for two years, and deepen existing academic education. In order to qualify for admission to a master's degree program, you will need an initial degree (normally a bachelor’s degree). You will also need to meet further conditions in order to qualify; these are detailed in the respective examination regulations. When applying to complete a master's degree program at the LMU, you will need to furnish evidence of a high level of proficiency in German. An exception is made here for master's degree programs and some double degree programs in which the course language is English.

Master's and postgraduate programs at LMU

After completing a master's degree program or a state examination, you can progress to acquire a doctoral degree (Dr. or PhD). There are some specific constellations (particularly in natural sciences) which allow students to embark on doctoral studies immediately on completion of a bachelor degree (“fast track”). A doctorate is proof of advanced academic ability, and is based on the completion of a candidate’s own piece of academic writing (dissertation) and an oral examination (“rigorosum” or “disputation”). The dissertation can be written as an individual project, supervised by a PhD mentor, or in the framework of a structured doctoral program.
